The first attestation of Gherla dates from 1291, when the Romanian village Gherlahida is mentioned (which will have an obscure existence until the construction of the "new fortress on Someş"), from which then the toponym Gherla crystallized, preserved to this day. The documentary mention appears in an act issued by the king of Hungary, Andrei III, by which he strengthens to the workers from Ocna Dejului several privileges. Until the 18th century, the village was called Gherla. The name Candia - Kandia is used after the formation of urban habitat. In the first half of the 16th century, a royal fortress was built in the northwestern part of the settlement, near the village of Candia.
